5 years after the abomination that was the Star of Milos and 6 years after the definitive anime series, a new Fullmetal alchemist movie has been announced. The twist? It’s gonna be live action. I have nothing against live action movies (that are done well) but FMA has a really, really bad track record with movies. Also, why is there a need to make a live action movie? I guess for the money? It’s been a while since FMA ended so its popularity is certainly dying down, so I guess it’s time to revitalize that?

The film will be directed by Fumihiko Sori who you might know from his work on the Ping Pong movie. They’re saying that since the movie will need a lot of CG, they needed an experienced person like Sori. Also announced is the guy who will be playing Edward, Ryosuke Yamada. He’s appeared in the recently released Assassination Classroom: Graduation live action film, starring as Nagisa. They can try and sell the movie as something that will be amazing as much as they want though, results will speak louder than their words. Remember Shingeki no Kyojin and all the advertising they did for that? Yeah, that didn’t turn out too well and I doubt anyone expects this to do well either.

There’s also the fact that they’re trying to adapt a entire series that spanned over 50+ episodes. Either they’re gonna make several (shitty) movies or they’re gonna do an original ending/new arc. I don’t think anyone is holding their breath for a faithful and good adaptation of the beloved FMA series, but only time will tell.
